June 10, 2011 - Press Release

Osage Police Department asks homeowners to help protect children.

With the kick off of warm weather and school dismissing for the summer the Osage Police Department is requesting assistance from homeowners who have swimming pools with a depth of 18 inches or more to protect children.

Child safety should be the number one concern of every adult.

If you have a swimming pool with a depth of 18 inches or more, Osage City Ordinance requires a fence of at least five (5) feet surround the pool, to keep children from wandering and/or playing in the pool without adult supervision.

“Children are our greatest resources” said Chief Russell E. Slight. “There are many safe ways for children to cool off on these warm days, safely. No community should have to bury a child.”

Please take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our children. Drowning is the leading cause of death in young children and, nationally, ranks 2nd only to automobile accidents, claiming lives of approximately 4,000 children each year and leaving 12,000 with some form of permanent brain damage.

March 29, 2011 - Press Release

The Osage Police Department would like to remind Osage Citizens of a telephone scam that has occurred more than once to residents.

Residents have received calls or emails from an individual stating that they are a relative in dire need of monetary assistance (accident, theft, etc) and that they can send the money by a facility such as Western Union.  The scam artist can be very convincing and even use names that they have obtained through internet searches.  Luckily, no one has lost their money by sending it to the subjects yet.

Please make sure to question any caller thoroughly that is asking for money and hang up from the call if you have any suspicions. Contact the Osage Police Department at 641-732-3777 or through our website www.osagepd.org with any questions or concerns.

April 22, 2010 - Press Release:

The Osage Police Department has responded to several recent reports of burglaries of automobiles.  We would like to caution the citizens to keep their vehicles locked at all items and do not leave valuables visible from the outside.

These burglaries occurred late at night or early morning hours of April 21, 2010 and April 22, 2010.  If the citizens hear or see anything suspicious, please call the Osage Police Department at 641-732-3777 or dial 911.  Thank you for your assistance.

It's Probably a Scam if......

~You get a call or an email out of the blue.
~The English is shaky, at best.
~There's a promise of lots of money for minimal effort.
~The e-mail is from someone in Eastern Europe, Asia or Nigeria.
~It involves depositing a check, then sending money somewhere through a wire-transfer service.
~You must "act now".
~It sounds too good to be true.

Scam Calls & Emails - February 24, 2010

The Osage Police Department would like to make Osage Citizens aware of a telephone scam that occurred with one of our residents.

The resident received a phone call from a male subject identifying himself as her son (by name) whom lives out of state.  He stated he was stuck in Chicago because he had lost his wallet and needed cash to get back home.  Believe the subject wanted a money gram as Hy-Vee was mentioned.  The resident stated the caller didn’t sound like himself and he gave the excuse of a cold.  The resident hung with the caller. The resident then spoke to her son who denied that he was the caller and had not traveled anywhere.

The Osage Police Department has received complaints of similar type calls and in fact the same scenario has also been seen in emails. The emails come from actual email addresses you are familiar with or very close.

Luckily this resident did not send any money, but that is not always the case.  Please make sure to question any caller thoroughly that is asking for money and hang up from the call if you have any suspicions. Contact the Osage Police Department at 641-732-3777 or through our website www.osagepd.org with any questions or concerns.

H1N1 Fraudulent Email - 12/02/2009

The CDC has received reports of fraudulent emails (phishing) referencing a CDC sponsored State Vaccination Program.

The messages request that users must create a personal H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov website. The message then states that anyone that has reached the age of 18 has to have his/her personal Vaccination Profile on the cdc.gov site.

CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration on www.cdc.gov. Users that click on the e-mail are at risk of having malicious code installed on their system. CDC reminds users to take the following steps to reduce the risk of being a victim of a phishing attack:

•Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open or respond to unsolicited email messages.

•Use caution when visiting un-trusted websites.

•Use caution when entering personal information online.

This past week the Osage Police Department has received the following reports of telephone scams:

Telephone & Mail Scams - 11/14/08

In the past few weeks we have received numerous reports from Osage citizen's stating they have taken calls from possible scam artists.  The majority of calls start out by saying that you have won a very large sum of money.  They may represent themselves as Publisher's Clearing House or other such persons.  They say for you to receive these winnings you will need to wire a certain amount of money - anywhere between $250-$5000 have been reported - to an account and then they will send you the winnings.  This is a scam!  Do not send your money to these criminals.  If you should receive such a call please notify the Osage Police Department at 641-732-377 immediately.

These offers have also been seen in letters sent to Osage residents.  Sometimes the letters come with checks of a portion of the winnings.  These checks are fraudulent and you will lose your money when they come back as such.  Again, do NOT send any money and do not cash the check.  If you receive a letter bring it in to the Police Department so we can make a copy of the letter.  Your bank can also tell you if the check is fraudulent.
